Squirrels are incredible animals that always amuse us with their tree-hopping antics and vibrant tails. But did you know that squirrels are also highly intelligent? They have a developed brain, the ability to learn and remember, and can adapt to different environmental conditions. In this article, we will explore how to approach squirrels and why it is important to understand their natural interaction with humans.
Squirrels are extremely adaptable and capable of distinguishing colors, shapes, and sizes of objects. Their intelligence is particularly evident when it comes to finding food and hiding their caches. It is fascinating to watch how squirrels store food in various locations and can even find their hidden treasures months later. Additionally, squirrels are masters at solving problems—they can open closed food boxes and find ways to bypass obstacles. Some studies suggest that squirrels can even use tools like sticks to reach food or protect themselves from predators.
While not at the top of the list of the most intelligent animals, squirrels certainly deserve recognition for their advanced abilities. Their adaptability, memory, and problem-solving skills contribute to their successful adaptation to various conditions.
But how do you approach squirrels and build a genuine friendship?
Squirrels are animals that can learn to recognize people who feed them. If they are regularly fed by the same individuals, squirrels will associate those people with food and will become bolder in their presence over time. This often occurs in urban areas where squirrels live close to humans.
However, it is important to note that feeding squirrels can have negative consequences. Human-provided food is often not suitable for their diet and can cause health problems. Overfeeding can also lead to dependency on human assistance and impair their ability to survive in the natural environment.
Every encounter with wild animals is an opportunity for a sense of wonder and connection with nature. When you are near a squirrel, it is important to be cautious and respect their space. Here are some tips on how to behave around squirrels:
Maintain a Safe Distance
To avoid scaring the squirrel, keep a safe distance from them. A few meters is enough to observe them without causing disturbance.
Be Quiet and Calm
Squirrels are very sensitive to sounds, so try to be quiet and calm while near them. This will allow them to remain relaxed and behave naturally.
Feed Them Natural Food
If you want to feed a squirrel, provide only natural food that they can find in nature, such as nuts, seeds, and fruit. Avoid giving them unhealthy items like bread, cakes, chips, salted and fried nuts, and other processed snacks.
Do Not Touch Them
Squirrels are wild animals and need enough space. Attempting to touch them can scare or disturb them. To gradually build trust, let them come closer to you over time.
Educate Children
Teach children not to chase squirrels. Squirrels are quick and agile, and such behavior would only upset them. Instead, encourage children to observe and respect them from a distance.
Keep Dogs on a Leash
If you bring a dog to an area where squirrels live, keep it on a leash to avoid disturbing these wild residents. We have witnessed many times when a dog owner says, "My dog won't hurt anyone," only for the dog to bite a jogger or kill a squirrel. Unfortunately, we have already buried three squirrels killed by a dog running off-leash in a place where it is explicitly forbidden. This alarming trend must be stopped.
Love and Respect
Those who truly love animals will be considerate towards squirrels. Their presence brings a special joy and connection with nature. Through their play, feeding, and social interactions, a beautiful atmosphere is created that can captivate you.
If you want to experience squirrels up close, be aware that your approach should be unobtrusive and respectful. Help preserve the wild world by observing these wonderful creatures from afar and allowing them to live their natural lives. If you are patient, squirrels will come to you when they feel no threat. This applies to urban squirrels; those living in the forest and wilderness should be left alone and not contacted.
Ultimately, while it is tempting to get close to squirrels and create a special bond, it is important to do so with caution and respect for their natural needs. Instead of feeding, observing and enjoying their natural habits will give you true joy and appreciation for these wonderful creatures.
