Squirrels are lively, curious animals that delight many people. Their playful antics, jumping, and running through parks, forests, and gardens often bring joy and happiness to onlookers. However, there is a hidden threat that endangers these wonderful creatures: dogs that roam off-leash. Unfortunately, this is not only a matter of squirrel safety but also a legal and moral responsibility of dog owners.
In Croatia, squirrels are protected by law, meaning that dog owners are legally obliged to keep their dogs on a leash to prevent attacks and injuries to this protected species. However, many dog owners refuse to do so, often claiming that their dogs would never harm anyone. This is a very dangerous assumption that can lead to serious consequences.
We have witnessed many times owners saying, "My dog won't hurt anyone," only to see the dog bite a jogger or kill a squirrel. Unfortunately, we have already buried three squirrels killed by a dog running off-leash in a place where it was explicitly forbidden. This alarming trend must be stopped.
Squirrels are not only legally protected animals but also an integral part of our ecosystem. They are natural seed dispersers and play a crucial role in maintaining the balance in forest ecosystems. A reduction in squirrel populations can lead to significant changes in ecosystems, potentially having serious consequences for the sustainability of natural resources and our environment.
Moreover, it's not just squirrels that are at risk from off-leash dogs but also the people trying to rescue them. Many people feel obliged to help squirrels that have lost their homes, are injured, or sick. However, when confronted with off-leash dogs, they become victims of the dogs' aggression. This is an extremely dangerous situation that can lead to serious injuries.
Dog owners who refuse to leash their pets often claim that this is natural behavior for dogs and that they will instinctively know how to behave around squirrels. However, the truth is that off-leash dogs can behave unpredictably, especially when they see fast-moving animals like squirrels. Dogs may chase, hunt, or even injure squirrels. This is not only dangerous for the squirrels but also for the dog, as squirrels can defend themselves and bite the dog.
In addition to being dangerous for animals, off-leash dogs can also endanger people's safety. Squirrels often live in urban parks where children play and people walk. If a dog chases a squirrel, it can run quickly and collide with people in its path, causing serious injuries. Therefore, it is extremely important that dog owners keep their pets on a leash and monitor their behavior around squirrels.
To protect squirrels and ensure their survival in urban parks, we must all work together. Local authorities and parks can put up signs warning dog owners to keep their pets on a leash. They could also conduct awareness campaigns about this issue, educate the public about the importance of protecting squirrels, and explain why it is important to keep dogs on a leash.
Dog owners, on the other hand, can adhere to regulations and keep their pets on a leash. They can train their dogs on how to behave properly around squirrels, ensuring they do not endanger their lives or human safety. Additionally, dog owners can participate in volunteer activities in parks, helping to maintain parks and support order to ensure the safety of all animals living in that environment.
Dog owners often don't realize that leashing their dog is both a legal and moral obligation. Many claim that their dogs won't harm anyone, but this is a very dangerous mindset. Dogs are instinctive animals and can sometimes display unexpectedly aggressive behavior. Even the gentlest dog can harm a squirrel or another animal if left to play freely without supervision.
In the end, as a society, we must understand that animals are as important as people. We are all part of nature and responsible for its protection. Animals like squirrels live in our cities and parks, and their lives can be endangered by careless human behavior. Therefore, if we want to protect these wonderful animals, we must work together and keep dogs on a leash. This will ensure the safety of both dogs and squirrels and create an environment where everyone can enjoy without fear of injury.
