Squirrel Nests and Nesting Boxes

Squirrels are adorable and charming creatures that are beloved by many people. However, despite their frequent presence in our surroundings, few people realize the importance of providing a safe nesting place for these animals. Squirrels are wild animals that live in trees and face numerous challenges, from natural disasters to predatory animals. One way we can help them is by building nesting boxes.

Young squirrels often fall out of their nests, and when this happens, they often don't survive. Therefore, building nesting boxes is an excellent idea as it helps ensure a safe and comfortable nest for young squirrels. Nesting boxes are small wooden houses that are placed in trees. These boxes are typically made of hardwood, such as oak or spruce, which ensures durability and resistance to weather conditions.

When squirrels are in a nesting box, they are safe from predators because the boxes are sturdy and well-protected, and they must be designed with an entrance that has a protective feature against predators.

In this way, nesting boxes also help preserve the natural habitat of squirrels. As cities and urban areas expand, there are fewer natural habitats for squirrels. Nesting boxes are an excellent solution to this problem as they can be placed in trees in parks and other green areas near cities. This way, squirrels can have their safe nests while still living close to human settlements.

If you are a nature lover and want to help squirrels, support us in acquiring or building nesting boxes. Building nesting boxes for squirrels is a simple way to show care for the environment and the wildlife that surrounds us.

Instructions and Dimensions for Squirrel Nesting Box

The entrance to the box should be 7cm in diameter. It should not be narrower to prevent a pregnant squirrel from getting stuck, and it should not be wider to keep predators out.

The box should have ventilation holes to prevent the squirrels from overheating in the summer.

The nesting boxes should look like small houses with multiple levels. The nest with the young squirrels is located at the bottom, which provides additional protection, while the mother squirrel has convenient access in and out.

The box should have a side door at the bottom that can be opened as needed. It is best to check the boxes once a year (ideally in September or October) because if the nest inside becomes infested with parasites, the squirrels will abandon it. Therefore, it is good to clean the boxes once a year, but never when there are young squirrels inside.

Materials for the interior of the nest include sisal and jute, which can be found in pet stores.

By following these guidelines, you can help create a safe and secure environment for squirrels, contributing to the conservation of these delightful creatures.
